True push horse, I have to drive and stay up all the way in the turns!
My horse is a true push horse, I have to stay up all the way around the barrels and never sit down. She rates and turns herself. She just folds around the barrels, sometimes I feel I am going to fall off or get behind her! How can feel more secure about that? Are there exercises I can do, anything you can suggest to help feel more with her in the turns?
I would suggest getting the biggest part of your fire and drive out of the turns; kick, whip, whatever works best for her. In the turn use the saddle horn to help you stay over the center of her, in lieu of pushing back and locking down, you will grip the horn hard, lock your bent elbow into your body and pull yourself towards in! Use your stirrups too. Make sure they are short enough you can stand balanced in them. The key is to stay in the center of your horse! Then you are with her and ready to drive out of turns again!
Some true push horses need you to keep kicking in the turns, not always two legs but maybe one leg at a time. Driving a horse and hanging on in a turn so you don't get in their way is the key!
I would suggest doing exercises that strengthen your hands, arms, legs, and your stomach; weights, piliates, posting while long trotting. That will help you stay strong throughout the run with your horse.
Great question and good luck!
