GOOD HORSES GONE BAD?
GOOD HORSES GONE BAD?
Why would my good rodeo 1D horse start running poorly, going by barrels, hitting barrels, alley issues?
I believe it usually comes down to 4 main reasons:, PAIN, FEAR, OVER-PRESSURED/RAN, RIDER or HORSE NERVES!
Pain: Have you had a couple vets that are skilled in performance horses, it could be body pain, like back, hips, or withers, it could be joint pain, ulcers, hoof pain, many factors can cause a good horse to quit working. Get blood work done, see if anemic or slight case of EPM, you never know until you have a detailed vet exam done.
Fear: Did you get after it with bigger bits or harsher training methods for making mistakes? Did you start riding differently, cues, whips, spurs, compensation, like get by on a few runs then a bad habit started?
Over-ran/pressured: Horses only have so many good runs in them and need time of to rest mentally and physically? Are you running at every rodeo and jackpot in town? Too many runs or hauling in one weekend?
Take the time to cherish your horse with a quality vet check, time off in the pasture to be a horse, work cattle for a change of pace, or haul and only slow exhibition and do gate work!
If you are given the gift of a 1D or rodeo caliber horse, don't be greedy and use it up and run it's legs off. Be picky about where you run and how often! Horses are gifts from God to us Cowgirls and we are their caretakers!
